?What we do

Our platform is a device which can be used to determine the exact angular position on the eye with reference to visual axis. This is necessary before any intervention for treating astigmatism of the eye either lens based or incisional.

The device can be used to evaluate surgical interventions after the surgery in regard to accuracy and efficacy. By providing an affordable, accurate, and easy to use device, treatment of one of the main refractive errors of the eye especially in the setting of cataract surgery is accessible for all eye care providers

Why this technology

Current Slit lamps do not have an accurate angular measurement system to address 1 degree precision needed for  Toric IOL implantation

  Using slit lamp platform ,which is  a basic part of  eye examination, as an accurate digital angular measurement system  meets the need for other devices

Our team has designed an innovative device which leverages Slit Lamp instruments already widely available in clinics and surgery centers

Our system increases the accuracy of positioning of the iol by providing angular position on the cornea

This improves refractive results and reduce reoperations to correct Toric IOL position.

Therefore we can improve visual  results  of toric intraocular lens implantation  by upgrading  the current instruments through  converting them to unprecedented digital markers

How it works

Our prototype  is a device that is added to slit lamp (the primary device used in every ophthalmic practice for the eye examination) and upgrades it to a precise angular measurement device

This axis is then marked and finally, the surgical methods are performed to correct astigmatism with the guidance of these marks.

Our prototype is a device that helps the ophthalmologist to determine the exact position of implanted IOLs or other surgical interventions used for treating astigmatism of the eye.

Statistics

For refractive precision, a Toric IOL must be perfectly aligned with the steep axis of the cornea. There is  1.2 M Global Toric IOL procedures which is performed in 2021, 1.7 M projected in 2026. Current methods are inconvenient and/or Expensive. However, this device provides angular measurements with high resolution and with 0.1 degrees steps and continuous 180 degree range. As a result, the refractive outcome following cataract surgery with a Toric IOL will be more predictable, and the need for reoperation to adjust the IOL position will be reduced.

Solution

Keratometers and corneal topographers are the standard methods for determining astigmatic axis, nevertheless, they are all used before surgical correction and cannot guide the surgeon during surgery.

Our device determines the exact position of the astigmatic axis with a precision of 0.1 degree.

In our method the device can be used for results validation which is unique and is not possible in the alternative methods which uses ways for validating the results different from their own

Furthermore, displaying the results on mobile phone screens makes reading easier for even presbyopes.

Being user-friendly is another advantage of our device

Problems

Astigmatism is one of the major causes of refractive error affecting visions in human.

Approximately 10 million cataract operations are performed each year in the world, with rates varying from 100 to 6000 operations per million populations per year.

Astigmatism affects one-third of all cataract operations, and it must be treated at the time of surgery because cataract surgery is now a refractive surgery aimed at treating all refractive errors.

Methods to correct astigmatism during cataract surgery are either corneal incisions  or toric intraocular lens  implantation.

Both groups require exact positioning of the astigmatic axis on the cornea

Current methods for accurately locating the astigmatic axis require many stages and are time consuming, or they are inaccurate, or both.
